Local Man with Both Time and Money to Help Thinks Someone Should Do Something About Homeless

SEATTLE, WA – A wealthy, retired, local man thinks someone needs to do something about the homeless issues affecting the city.
“There’s too many homeless people out there and someone needs to do something about it,” said Steve Henderson. “When I’m driving through the city, in my Porsche, to have a nice dinner or on my way to my boat, I see a lot of homeless people and frankly I’m sick and tired of seeing them. Someone needs to do something about it. I don’t pay taxes but other people do so someone should do something and clean it up a bit.”
Henderson, a retired multimillionaire former CEO of a multinational bank, splits his time between his Seattle home and his condos in Hawaii and the Colorado Mountains.
“There is this coffee shop I like to visit downtown (Seattle) because they have this coffee that is grown in a monastery at the top of the Andes mountains by blind monks and it’s imported every month,” said Henderson. “It’s one of those coffees that the beans are eaten by an endangered monkey or some other marsupial, and the animal poops the beans out and those beans are ground to brew the coffee. It’s amazing, and really hard to find. But this place has it and I like to sit there drinking my coffee and reading a book for a couple hours in the morning, before I head out on my boat for a sail around the sound, and I see so many homeless people just all over the place. But you know, I don’t see homelessness in Aspen like I do (in Seattle). So, someone there obviously figured it out. Though I do see some in Hawaii. But it’s easy to ignore there since the islands are so beautiful and our driver knows how to avoid the ugly spots.”
Homeless outreach organizations say they have contacted Henderson in the past about helping to support programs by donating his time or money, but Henderson has turned them down each time.
“(Henderson) has the time to help and the resources to help so we keep trying to reach out to him but each time he tells us he’s not interested or that we need to get real jobs,” said Homes to Us, Director Rachel Clipone. “But we’ll keep trying. Someday we’ll convince a rich white man to help us… someday. If we had his help it would go a long way, and we would be able to help out so many people. But no, these rich white guys just care about their boats and some weird island.”
Henderson has voted against taxes increases to help address homelessness in Washington for 25 years.
“Raising my taxes, if I paid taxes, isn’t the fix for (homelessness),” said Henderson. “Someone needs to sit down and figure it out. Someone with the time and money and desire to see this issue resolved needs to get in there are help. And I sure wish they would hurry up because I’m sick of seeing homeless people from my boat. Surely there is someone out there that could do this. Not me though. I need all my money to buy caviar and gas for my planes and boats and my time is just taken up by all the sitting on my boat that I need to do.”
